ELKINS – Elkins High School 2021 graduate Nathaniel Whetsell recently received the West Virginia Wing Civilian Air Patrol Fellowship.

Whetsell, who graduated from EHS last spring, will receive a renewable scholarship with an initial amount of $ 3,750. The scholarship can be used to cover the cost of a four-year college, community college, or vocational school. It will provide up to $ 2,000 per year for civilian air patrol cadets who maintain a GPA of 2.75.

Whetsell, a cadet-captain of the Elkins Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, plans to attend Fairmont State University to study criminal justice this fall.

While serving in the CAP for the past five years, Whetsell attended the West Virginia Wing Summer Camp in 2017 and 2018. He completed the Cyber ​​Familiarization Course, the Leadership Training Course for WV Wing Cadets and the North East Region Cadet Leadership Virtual School.

“The West Virginia Wing Cadet Program was the passion of Colonel Dennis D. Barron and he established the West Virginia Wing Civil Air Patrol Cadet Scholarship to enable our cadets to continue to achieve their objectives outside of civilian air patrol. Col. Connie Moody, West Virginia Wing Civilian Air Patrol Commander, said. “He was always quick to say, ‘Cadets are our future leaders.’

“As a friend and colleague of Colonel Barron, it was an honor to present the West Virginia Wing Civilian Air Patrol Cadet Scholarship to Nathaniel Austin Whetsell,” said Moody.

The West Virginia Wing Civilian Air Patrol Cadet Scholarship is only available to eligible West Virginia Wing cadets. In order to qualify for the scholarship, a West Virginia Wing cadet must have earned the Amelia Earhart Award and graduated from high school with at least a GPA of 2.50.

The Civil Air Patrol was established in 1941 and is the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force. It operated a fleet of 560 single-engine Cessna aircraft and over 2,000 small unmanned aircraft systems.

As a non-profit organization, the ACP plays a leading role in aerospace education using STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education based on national academic standards.
