First quarter (July – September 2021)
  • Net sales increased 10.2 percent and amounted to SEK 2,911 million (2,641). Organic growth, including targeted acquisitions, was 6.8%.
  • The operating result (EBIT) amounts to 233 million Swedish kronor (221).
  • Adjusted operating income, adjusted for elements affecting comparability and the effects of IFRS 16, amounts to 194 million Swedish kronor (151). Items affecting comparability amounted to -30 million Swedish kronor (10) relating to a fire in a compulsory school.
  • The net profit for the period amounts to 100 million Swedish kronor (91).
  • Earnings per share was 0.94 SEK (0.87) after dilution. Adjusted for IFRS 16, earnings per share were 1.15 SEK (1.11) after dilution.
  • The average number of children and students in preschool, compulsory school and upper secondary school in the first trimester was 91,431 (85,642), an increase of 6.8 percent.

In 2021/22 we are welcoming more children, students and participants than ever before, the demand for Media AcademyEducation has never been so good. Eleven new units opened during the first quarter, three high schools in Sweden and eight kindergartens in Germany. The number of children and students increased by 6.8%. Demand for adult education remains high, with our higher vocational education (HVE) programs seeing a 25 percent increase in attendance.

Strong growth in higher vocational education

Media AcademyThe adult education segment continues to grow, both in terms of sales and revenue. The strongest growth has been in Media AcademyThe HVE programs of, which welcomed 10,200 students at the start of the academic year, ie 25% more participants than the previous year. The existing operations as well as the acquisition of KYH contributed to the growth. HVE is a form of education that benefits both the individual and society as the programs reflect the needs of the labor market, with around 90 percent of graduates finding employment after graduation.

A record number of students are starting in our high schools

We are pleased to report that nearly 16,000 freshmen have started in one of the Media Academyback-to-school high schools. It’s more than ever. Many of these students have entered one of our upper secondary schools with a career orientation, in job training programs – many in sectors facing a labor shortage.

Three new high schools have also opened their doors: Klara Teoretiska Gymnasium in Västerås, Designgymnasiet Malmö and Praktiska Gymnasiet in Norrköping.

Continued strategic development of the compulsory school segment

A year ago, we renamed 28 units in our compulsory school segment. The aim was to clarify the educational offer for tutors and to allow schools with a common pedagogical concept and similar working methods to work and develop together.

Since the name change, the cooperation between schools of the same profile has worked well. The profiles served as a solid basis for joint development and enhanced cooperation which benefited both staff and students. This reinforced our belief that this is the right strategy, and in this context, we launched a new compulsory school profile, Innovitaskolan, shortly after the end of the term.

Innovitaskolan combines traditional education with modern tools and methods. 41 units, all former Pysslingenskolor, are part of Innovitaskolan. We are convinced that Innovitaskolan fits well with our other four educational profiles, Noblaskolan, Montessori Mondial, Pops Academy, and Vittra.

Rapid growth of our activities in Germany

In Germany, growth has returned to the expansionary level slowed down by the pandemic. During the quarter, we opened eight new kindergartens with a total of 415 children. Currently, a total of 4,400 children attend one of our German preschools, an increase of 23% compared to last year. Over the next three quarters, we plan to open seven more units, which will provide an additional 330 spaces.

Ten years of transparent quality reporting

October 21, Media Academy published its annual quality report for the tenth consecutive year. Reporting quality results in a consistent and transparent manner using the same model is unique in the world of schools in Sweden.

This reporting has provided a basis for analysis and improvement of the organization, where we now do continuous grade forecasting and lead significant employee grade and assessment training initiatives. Please read more about our quality report on page 11 of this interim report.

We would like to see the introduction of independent knowledge tests and centrally scored national national tests in Sweden. We believe this is an important key to improving and developing the Swedish school system.

Political debate intensifies

The 2022 elections in Sweden are now less than a year away. Various political parties are launching different proposals that affect both schools in general and the conditions of independent schools.

The debate centers on the need to improve the performance of Swedish schools and the need for schools to become more equal – in other words, that every student should have the same opportunity to achieve their goals. Most people agree that these are important questions; the disagreement is about how best to resolve them and what caused the problems.

Regulatory changes in the school sector take time, which is a good thing. In addition, no proposal currently has a political majority. Schools need long-term solutions where responsible politicians and school providers (whether independent or municipal) can develop the system in the right direction. The Swedish education system is crucial if Sweden is to remain a competitive country. This is why politicians, researchers and industry representatives must agree on the rules of the game. Independent schools are an important and important part of Swedish education.
