Bridge Liberia supported students at the summit

As the world commemorates the International Day of the Girl Child, students from schools supported by Bridge Liberia joined other adolescent girls in Monrovia on Monday October 10 to participate in a one-day girls’ summit and panel discussion.

Organized by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare, the summit and roundtable focused on the growth and development of the girl child in Liberia.

More than 120 teenage girls gathered at Monrovia City Hall to discuss several issues including career choices, teenage challenges, drug addiction, among others. Students also took advantage of the event to network with expert presenters who deliberated on these topics.

These networking and extracurricular activities support student development outside of the classroom, in addition to the learning that takes place in the classroom. Core curriculum activities as described in Bridge for Students are part of student learning and development in the Bridge Liberia ecosystem.

This year, the world celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child under the theme, ”our time is now,-our rights, our future”, a time when global education actors are also calling for equity in education.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said at the recent Transforming Education Summit: “When girls and women have an equal chance to learn – and when education supports gender equality for all – communities and societies prosper”.

This statement is at the heart of Bridge Liberia’s Principles for Equity in Education.

Bridge Liberia, which is the largest partner in the Liberia Education Advancement Program under the Ministry of Education, is empowering a new generation of confident and successful girls by dramatically improving their learning outcomes.

Bridge-supported teachers are trained to engage boys and girls in the classroom. As fewer girls than boys tend to volunteer in the classroom, teachers are trained to practice what is known as cold calling to ensure equal participation.

Professional development and classroom management techniques aim to encourage girls to be leaders inside and outside the classroom.

All of these interventions and principles have yielded positive results for girls in the Bridge ecosystem.

The average performance of fifth-grade girls in fluent reading increased by more than 27 words per minute. Once lagging behind by 10 words per minute, girls are now outperforming boys.

According to a recent study conducted by 2019 Nobel Laureate Michael Kremer and his team as part of one of NewGlobe’s programs in Kenya, girls are making the same leap in learning as boys.

This methodology is the same as that used in schools supported by Bridge Liberia. As NewGlobe is the technical partner of Bridge Liberia.
