Minister of Education Nyan Gadsby-Dolly – Jeff Mayers

Education Minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly said Forms 1 to 3 students who are vaccinated will be allowed to return to physical school within the next two weeks if all goes well.

She made the statement during her contribution to the budget debate on Friday.

She called on parents to get their children vaccinated and send them back to school, because it was better for them.

Gadsby-Dolly said the ministry’s goal was to prioritize the reopening of physical schools and allow children to return home safely.

She said about 19,000 children enter the school system each year, including about 12,000 high school graduates without basic qualifications. She said the covid19 pandemic has contributed to this loss of learning and a growing achievement gap.

She said the allocation given to her ministry would be used to continue distributing electronic devices to teachers and students, creating an educational technology unit to improve the current learning system, and for a management system of the education and other initiatives.

She said the teachers have been trained in collaboration with international organizations.

“Considerable effort has gone into training our teachers, with 12,294 or 93% of our teachers… trained in at least one online course as of March 2020.”

She said at least 15 consultations had taken place with stakeholders since August 2020 on the functioning of schools, including seven between July and September 2021 on the physical reopening of schools.

“We have met TTUTA three times – July 13, August 12, September 14 – four meetings with broader stakeholders – July 12, 14, 16, August 13, September 16. It is important for us to meet to get the recommendations, to understand what the stakeholders are saying and on that basis to develop a policy.

“But make no mistake, the final decision-making process must rest with the government, because we have been empowered by the people to make those decisions.”

She said the ministry had envisioned modern education for all in eight different areas.

“The amendment of the Education Act; human resource development and human resource systems development; equity in quality education and schools; curriculum reform and the way we revise our curriculum to support holistic development; the revitalization of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and the importance of TVET for developing creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation; digital transformation; ease of transition through levels of the education system, including SEA; and ensure student success.

She said $ 645 million has been allocated for GATE, HELP, scholarships and scholarships.

Further consultations will take place with the general population, she said, on what they want to include in the education system, including the teaching of Spanish and sign language at school level. elementary school, compulsory community service in the arts, sports and community development; and the use of e-books and e-tests.

Tabaquite MP Anita Haynes, in her response, said that even though consultations had taken place, it did not mean that stakeholders were happy. She said curriculum reform had not been sufficiently mainstreamed into the process ahead.
