WAPAKONETA – Marion Local kept hammering him inside her powerful players.

And Wapakoneta responded with his 3-point dams.

Ultimately, Marion Local withstood Wapakoneta’s 3-point shot 59-56 in a women’s basketball game on Saturday afternoon.

Wapak’s Allie Wilson tied a school record with seven 3 points in the game and scored 21 points.

Her seven 3-pointers tied the school score held by Megan Watt and Nicole Brown.

“At first I missed a lot of my three, they went straight in and out,” Wilson said. “But I kept shooting and my team cheered me on. They told me to keep shooting and I did. Towards the end, I was hot.

Addy Allen of Wapak scored 14 with four 3 points.

As a team, Wapak hit 12 3 points, out of 36 attempts, to tie another school record for 3 points in a game.

“It was pretty cool to be part of a team that can break records,” Wilson said. “It’s great to have a team like this, where we’ve been playing together since the third year, and to be able to set records. “

But while Wapak focused on the long-distance jumpers, the Flyers came inside with Sammy Hoelscher, 5-foot-9, Lindsey Koenig, 5-foot-10 and Molly Winter, 6-foot.

Hoelscher scored from inside and out and had 19 points, three 3 points and seven rebounds.

Koenig scored 18 from the inside and Winner scored 17, all low.

“We knew the road was going to be tough on the inside,” said Wapak coach Rusty Allen. “They are so physical. It was a concern for us. But I thought my post players gave me everything they could.

“But Allie (Wilson) has been shooting the ball well for us all year and we talked to Addy (Allen), that you need to be more of a goalscorer than a host and both of them tonight have done a great job of making it happen. keep us in the game. ”

Wapakoneta, who played without injured Katie Lisi, is 2-4. Marion Local is 4-3.

Marion Local led 59-56 with 9.9 seconds left after Winner had two free shots.

Wapak went through the Flyers’ half-court trap and Allen fired a 3-point shot that missed with a second to go. The ball ended up going out of bounds for the Flyers and Marion’s local held on for the win.

The fourth quarter was a perfect summary of the back-and-forth flow of the game and the contrast in team styles.

Marion Local led 39-37 after three quarters and pulled out a 10-0 streak to take a 49-37 lead with 5:56 to go.

“Our daughters didn’t panic though,” said coach Allen. “We talked about it at halftime. We said we weren’t going to get in a lot on the inside so we really need to work the ball and find ways to be creative on the outside.

During this race, Hoelscher scored on a layup and a 3 point.

But Wapak returned with the three.

Allen and Wilson both sank at 3 points.

Then Wilson dropped 3 consecutive points, the second with 2:30 left.

That propelled Wapak on a 14-4 run and the Redskins moved closer to 53-51 with 1:50 to go.

But while Wapak scored four 3-pointers in the final quarter, he was unable to score three more in the final two minutes.

Hoelscher scored seven points for the Flyers in the final quarter.

“I’m training him (Hoelscher) in the AUA,” Allen said. “I know her pretty well. She is a player. She does so many different things. She can shoot the ball, she can drive and she can pass. ”

Wapak took a 16-11 lead after the first quarter. Wilson, Allen and Elisabeth Good’s 3 points helped the Redskins take the lead.

Marion Local ran a 9-0 run to start second to take a 20-16 lead. The Flyers went inside for most of the second quarter and scored six of their eight baskets on layups.
